Hello, everyone. My name is Mayu. Last year, I went to the University of Lethbridge for 3 months. I took an EAP program at this university. EAP is an abbreviation of “English for Academic Purposes.” During the 3 months, I took 4 courses: Grammar, Reading, Writing and Communication. In my class, there were 12 students. They were from China, Korea and Japan. In the class, of course we had to speak English even when we talked between the students from the same country. At first it was difficult for us to communicate with each other, but we knew that we should do that to improve our English. It was very good speaking practice. Also, I made it a rule to say my opinion positively in class. The reason why I had this policy was for the atmosphere of my class. Many students always said their own opinions as soon as they had any. So, it was easy for me to say my opinion in front of my fellow members. I made great efforts to participate positively in the class.
In my homestay, I had a host mother and a roommate from Korea. My host mother took us many places, for example, a shopping mall, a restaurant and some sightseeing spots. I think the time which I spent with my family was the most memorable part of my life in Canada. We made a Jack-o-lantern for Halloween and decorated a big Christmas tree for Christmas. Also sometimes, we made a pizza for our supper. Through my homestay experience, I learned a lot of new things. I think the communication time with my family was also good English practice.
Before I went to Canada, I was so nervous because all things which I tried in Canada were new experiences for me. But now, I really think my study abroad made me grow a lot. It is not just about study. I learned the characteristics of Canadian people, Canadian culture and some traditional days in Canada. If you are interested in studying abroad, I would strongly recommend it to you.
